“The Lord is my shepherd” is a sentence widely used by Christians around the world. It’s a popular Psalm that is recited, prayed, sung, and meditated on.

What is this Psalm saying to us as empowered godly wives? What powerful messages can we unlock from these five words?

The Lord Is My Shepherd Messages For Godly Wives

The Lord is my shepherd, tells who the Lord is, unlocks our identity as sheep, and describes our relationship with Him.

My Shepherd

The first message of Psalm 23 tells us there is a fold, that we are sheep, and that the Shepherd taking care of us is the Lord. The Lord is a lot of things to us. He is a provider, our guide in dark valleys, and our protector.

Empowered godly wives can find contentment knowing that they don’t have to worry about provision, guidance, and protection because the Shepherd will ensure that our needs are met.

His Sheep

Psalm 23 is a reminder for us to unlock and embrace our identity as God’s sheep.

If as women of God we believe that He’s our shepherd, it simply means that we are His sheep. The Shepherd may have to deal with wolves, dark valleys, and green pastures, but none of those compares to His main focus. That is–His sheep.

All that the Shepherd does is for His sheep. This is profound. It means that every mom, every wife, and every woman of God is so special that the Lord is willing to put His life on the line for her.

We are not just empowered godly wives. We are His sheep. His Favorite Sheep! This is confirmed in St. John 10.

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. (John 10:11 NIV)

Our Relationship

The third message found in the lines “The Lord is my shepherd” is about relationships. The sheep is dependent on the shepherd for everything. As empowered Christ followers, we can be confident that we’ll lack nothing when the Lord is our shepherd.

As women of God we know that green pastures and still waters are promised to us. Even when we encounter enemies and wolves on the journey, we can be confident of the trust, love, and care that our Shepherd has demonstrated and will continue to demonstrate.

Our relationship with the Shepherd tells us who we are (His sheep), who He is (our Shepherd), and why we can depend on Him.

“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— ¹⁵ just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep. (John 10:14-15 NIV)

Final Thought

“The Lord is my shepherd” is not just a line from a popular Psalm, it has messages for godly wives. God is our shepherd, we are His sheep, and our relationship with Him are three important messages that inspire, empower, and transform godly wives.

Continue to see the Lord as your shepherd. Continue to embrace your identity as His sheep. Most importantly, continue to embrace your relationship with Him.
