Today’s chapter: Psalms 23

Today’s verse: Psalms 23:1

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

David the shepherd boy, angels visiting shepherds by night and the parable of the lost sheep are popular Bible stories that capture the relationship between the sheep and the shepherd.

The best and greatest shepherd mentioned in the Bible is God. Psalms 23 captures the essence of who God is to His children using the relationship that a shepherd has with his sheep.

The shepherd ensures that all the needs of his sheep are met. Food, water, shade and rest are some provisions that are looked after with intricate care.

Take God as the shepherd of your life. He will make sure that you don’t lack any good thing. Remember, all good gifts are from the father above you shall not be in want of anything.

A good shepherd ensures that the sheep have a comfortable place to rest and an ample supply of water for them to be refreshed.

God the shepherd will make sure that you find rest in Him. He values rest so much that He has made provision for you to rest since creation. He created the world then rested on the seventh day and He wants you to enjoy that rest. He said, Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28)

No shepherd wants harm to come upon his sheep. This is why the path that the sheep must travel on is one that poses little or no risk. The terrain should be as such that it doesn’t present the risk of danger or harm. Dangers may include hillsides that the sheep may fall from and harm may be animals that will pounce upon the sheep to hurt them.

You don’t have to go through life figuring out things all by yourself. God has created a path specifically for you and He will lead you on that path.

The shepherd uses the rod and staff to lead the sheep and keep them on the intended path that they should travel. With a loving keen shepherd sheep are confident that their best interest are always kept in mind.

The world has many evils and the enemy will try to harm you but you can feel safe that God the shepherd will protect you from harm and danger.

The shepherd is not sparing in fulfilling the needs of the sheep. A cup overflowing depicts the abundance of provision that the sheep have at their disposal.

God the shepherd will supply all your needs. Trust and depend on Him and you will never be in want.

Even if a sheep goes astray the shepherd will lovingly search for it because he places a high value on each sheep.

God is merciful and long suffering, He loves you with an everlasting love. You will never be able to stray too far away for Him to forget you or stop searching for you.

David was willing to fight a lion and a bear to protect his sheep. A shepherd was willing to leave his fold of ninetynine sheep to search for one that was lost. These two stories show all that a shepherd is willing to do and how far he is willing to go to ensure the safety of his sheep.

God will do so much more for you than David did for his sheep. Submit to Him, accept Him as the shepherd of your life. He will provide for you and you shall not want.
