Today’s chapter: Psalm 42
Today’s verse: Psalm 42:1
As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.
It is said that deer usually live near a source of water. A deer that is about one hundred pounds will drink two to three quarts of water in a day. This amount may increase during hot dry weather.
Throughout the day deer need to keep hydrated as they lose water through urine, droppings and their breath while panting.
Deer usually do not stray too far from a watering hole. In case they get thirsty a source of water is nearby.
David took an important life lesson from the deer. The eating, sleeping and traveling patterns of a deer revolved around one all important thing-water.
Likewise, David took God as his source of life giving water. In Psalms 42:2 David said, “My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God…”
Stay close to water
Stay close to God the way a deer stays close to a source of water. Talk to Him. Consult Him with your plans. Allow him to determine how far to go.
Literal and spiritual lessons we may learn from deer
Deer drink water after bedding.
It is encouraged by many to drink a glass of water as soon as you wake each morning.
Go to God when you wake. Thank Him for sustaining you through the night and place yourself, your spouse, your children and all your plans for the day in His care.
Deer drink water before eating
Having a glass of water at the right time before eating is a health tip that has been promoted for years.
Saying a prayer before having meals is a way to punctuate your day with thanksgiving. It is also a simple yet profound way of acknowledging God as your provider.
Deer head to water after traumatic experiences
After been chased by a predator or receiving a shot in the belly a deer becomes very thirsty.
There is no better option than seeking God throughout the challenges of life. When temptations chase you, when loss and grief wound you head to the Living Water.
David was sorrowful when he said, “my tears have been my meat day and night”. (Psalms 42:3)However in his sorrow he yearned for God.
Yearn for God the way David did in times of sorrow. “As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God”.
Stay close to God the way a deer stays close to water.
